As the name suggests, Ruin Pubs are bars, pubs or clubs that are set up in literal ‘ruins’. Abandoned warehouses, crumbling buildings, remains of a demolished sites, most pubs have the same ‘decorated with the contents of a skip’ vibe, but each have their own unique character. A large number are found within the Jewish quarter of Budapest or 'downtown' which itself is a network of student bars, clubs and restaurants. Not only this, majority of ruin pubs have live DJs and concerts so check online for what's on during your visit.
Szimpla Kert - perhaps the most notorious of its type (they even sell their own t-shirts) is along Kazinczy u. road, which itself is filled with student eating outlets and other bars of the type - a great place to start. Although most are open later in the evening, Szimpla Kert is often open in the afternoon, which makes it easier to explore numerous wacky rooms, as it's often overcrowded at night. Decorated with graffiti, an antique car, and quite frankly the contents of a car boot sale, Szimpla Kert embodies the spirit of ruin pubs and their unusual style. Despite its popularity, drinks served are pretty cheap here too.

Instant - one of the largest ruin pubs in Budapest occupying two buildings, featuring animal sculptures and disco balls, its unsurprising people get lost inside due to its ‘fallen down the rabbit hole’ vibes. One of the leading ruin pubs for live music and the latest DJs.
Budapest, Nagymező u. 38, 1065 Hungary
Kuplung - an underground well-hidden retreat, featuring jellyfish lanterns and under-the-sea décor, originally an auto repair shop. Like multiple other ruin pubs, Kuplung is host to upcoming art, with the outdoor garden area playing host to multiple murals.
Budapest, Király u. 46, 1061 Hungary
Anker’t - within an old abandoned factory Anker’t also is one of the largest outdoor ruin pubs, different courtyards serve different purposes: socialising areas, courtyards for special events and separate dance floors. Although this is a more expensive choice, this is a slightly smarter pub with less of the erratic decor.
