A picturesque harbour of sun-bathed houses painted in bright yellows, warm oranges and pastel pinks, Porto is the perfect city break for those looking to sit back and relax with a classic glass of Port (or three!). Boasting seven magnificent bridges and many more antique port wine cellars, this quaint city is easy one of the most beautiful destinations I've visited. And of course if you're more interested in the architecture, the history, or the culture rather than sitting amongst the cobbled streets and watching the world go by, Porto is rich with tourist attractions. Read our introduction to the gorgeous Porto to find out how this coastal city stole our hearts.
Portugal's second largest metropolis (after Lisbon), Porto is a beautiful maze of cobbled streets, brightly painted homes and vintage shutter-framed windows. We were bowled over by not only the city's beauty, but also the incredible food and of course their Port wine! Stylish and sleek restaurants and bars are hidden amongst the old barber shops, grocers and fishmongers, giving the city a real mixed feeling of luxury and antiquity. Hit up the postcard-perfect the old town of Ribeira is a tourist favourite and home to plenty of seafood and Portuguese restaurants if you're looking to enjoy food with a view. The charming townhouses line the the robust River Duoro and are shadowed by the infamous Dom Luis bridge, a must do when visiting the city! And of course there is plenty more to do than just eat! The city is home to the pristine Crystal Gardens, the grand Clerigos tower and the beautifully painted São Bento train station. But don't just take our word for it, flights to Porto are cheap and with some amazing airbnbs which are really great value for money, it makes this Portugese city the ideal summer city break.
Currency: Euro
Around £1:1.15 Language: Portuguese Time Difference: None! Best Time to Visit: Early summer/early autumn to miss the summer-holiday crowds but to still be able to bask in the gorgeous Portuguese sun and make the most of the outdoor bars and restaurants. We visited early June and found it was still hot enough for us to burn (typical British) without being crazily busy or having to wait in long queues. Not only that airbnbs and flights were pretty reasonable this time of the year, making this an inexpensive, sunny city break. Flight Time: 2.5 hours Price Range: I was extremely surprised by how good value for money Porto really is. Food and drinks (particularly alcohol) is really surprisingly cheap given how beautiful and popular the city is. Despite being in arguably the busiest tourist spot (the old town of Ribeira) and with a stunning view of the the Dom Luís I Bridge, we often only paid around 10-13 euros for a jug of sangria and around 3-4 euros for a glass of wine. Probably the highest cost during your stay will be accommodation, but I found alot of really stylish and modern homes on air b'n'b and ours in particular was amazing value for money.
