If I could only recommend you do one thing in Hanoi, it would 100% be a street food tour of the city. Prior to my visit to Hanoi, I had never tried Vietnamese food, and honestly I didn't know what to expect of the food, so a street tour with a Vietnamese guide was a perfect opportunity for me to try some real authentic cuisine from places recommended by locals. We've compiled a review of the street food tour we booked with Hanoi Street Food Tour, we've also compared some other tours available online.
Hanoi Street Food Tour is one of the best food tour companies in Hanoi, with a 5/5 star rating on TripAdvisor from over 5,000 reviews, and honestly I'm not surprised. (TripAdvisor Link)
At only $20 per person, this includes the tour guide, all food and drink during the tour, which considering we visited 8 restaurants was an amazing price. You can arrange a time available with the tour group ranging from morning lunch or evening tours at a time that suits you. We met our guide Teddy at 6:30pm at the tours office and paid briefly before leaving, and in a group of roughly 12,15 we wandered the streets of Hanoi following our guide. We were taught not only what we were eating but how to eat it, with Teddy teaching us how to garnish our food, which dips and sauces to use and which beers would be best paired with the food! We were taken to authentic Vietnamese restaurants and cafes, placed we probably wouldn't have tried if we had eaten alone. Sat on tiny plastic chairs only a foot off the ground we ate with the locals, trying fried foods to seafood soups and even snails, all foods I wouldn't have even been able to find on menus had we been alone.
